From July 20th to 22nd, the Biokeralty Research Institute participated in the NANOMED Summer School – “Medicinal Tissue Engineering”, an intensive, high-level program hosted at the University of Pavia (Italy). Gathering master’s and PhD students, the event covered the full spectrum of tissue engineering, from basic research to clinical and regulatory approaches.
As a key partner in the Horizon Europe TEN4CARE project, which aims to develop a next-generation 4D nanocomposite hydrogel for tendon repair, Biokeralty plays a critical role in ensuring that cutting-edge science successfully transitions from the laboratory to the real world.
Representing Biokeralty, Ángel del Pozo delivered a highly anticipated masterclass on the closing day of the event, titled “What’s next: the use of knowledge in research". Designed as a “Horizon Europe survival kit" for early-career researchers, his session focused on the critical steps needed to turn research results into real-world impact.
During his presentation, del Pozo provided practical insights into Communication, Dissemination, Stakeholder Engagement, and Intellectual Property (IP) Management. Key takeaways included:
- The Grandma Rule (Communication): The importance of explaining why a project matters in human language, ensuring that society understands the value of the research without needing complex technical data like p-values.
- Precise Sharing (Dissemination): Effective dissemination goes beyond merely generating public hype. It requires delivering targeted, highly precise messages to specific user groups (such as clinicians, regulators, or industry partners) who can directly use and apply the research outcomes.
- IP Rule Zero: A crucial warning for researchers not to accidentally compromise their own inventions through premature public disclosure (such as tweeting a patent or depositing a thesis before talking to the Technology Transfer Office).
- Making Results Do Useful Work: Highlighting that exploitation means using results to create value, whether through clinical practice guidelines, policy recommendations, or business spin-offs.
Biokeralty’s participation at the NANOMED Summer School perfectly reflects its core mission within the TEN4CARE consortium. Biokeralty leads the project’s strategy for Communication, Dissemination, and Stakeholder, ensuring that the innovative biomaterials developed align with market needs, clinical realities, and societal expectations. Furthermore, Biokeralty co-leads the scientific and innovation management of the project, steering the consortium towards optimal technological and market readiness.
